About the verb library
This edition contains 721 Japanese verbs with explicit dictionary classes, kana readings, selected English meanings, conjugation tables, and examples. The first 50 entries are an everyday starting collection with original teaching sentences.
Dictionary data
Word meanings, readings, and verb classes are adapted from JMdict, maintained by the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group. We use the 2026-11-02 snapshot distributed by jmdict-simplified. Each verb page links to its dictionary entry and identifies the selected sense.
Dictionary adaptations and original teaching examples are licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0. Changes include selecting one sense and spelling, formatting meanings, adding する to eligible verbal nouns, and generating forms. EDRDG license statement · Data notice.
Sentence examples
50 original examples have explicitly written kana readings. The other 671 examples come from Tatoeba, associated with the selected dictionary sense by JMdict. We require both Japanese and English text to match the current attributed pair. Each page credits both authors and links to both sentences under CC BY 2.0 FR.
Dictionary sentences keep their original spelling and translation. Full-sentence kana is shown only when it has been authored; we do not invent readings for source sentences. Highlighting identifies the inflected form that appears in the example, which may differ from the dictionary form.
Conjugation rules
Godan, ichidan, する, and 来る are explicit data fields, not guesses based on spelling. The engine handles common ending changes, 行く→行って, ある→ない, and the changing readings in 来る→来ます→来ない. Potential forms are included for selected everyday action meanings; many verbs need additional contextual judgment. Classical, ambiguous, unsupported special classes, and auxiliary-only senses are excluded.
The grammar reference follows the Japan Foundation’s Irodori notes. Our comparison examples are original. Tables show common modern standard forms and do not attempt a complete account of honorific, dialectal, or literary conjugation.
Selection and limits
We select common dictionary entries with supported verb classes and a suitable attributed example, after pinning the everyday collection. We respect spelling, reading, and sense restrictions, and omit duplicate headwords. This is a useful reference, not a frequency ranking or a JLPT syllabus.
Automated checks validate identities, readings, forms, example ranges, and attribution. Editorial checks cover the core collection and representative exceptions. The complete library has not received an independent Japanese teacher’s review. Dictionaries and contributed sentences can contain errors or usage that needs context.
